It contains 7 position descriptions, 10 documents on the role of committees, 4 organization charts, 5 documents on the organization of functions, and an analysis of a Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) collection development survey. The survey, which was mailed to the 90 members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in 1974, gathered information on the organization of the collection development function and the content of collection development policies in ARL libraries. Results from 60 responding libraries indicate that 51 (85%) have either an individual whose sole responsibility is collection development, a functioning collection development committee, or both. The survey includes statistics and commentary on: formalization and structure of the collection development function, role of the collection development officer, role of the collection development committee, decision processes, fund allocation, policy formulation, materials selection, monitoring expenditures for materials, concentration/diffusion of authority, use of collection development policy, cooperative programs, and collection evaluation. Results indicate that the collection development process is evolving toward increased formalization, more coordination of diverse interests, increased reliance on cooperative activities, and increased emphasis on collection weeding and secondary storage.
