contents Library Instruction. SPEC Kit 17. Academic Libraries Administrative Organization Centralization Decentralization Higher Education Library Instruction Library Surveys Orientation Materials Program Descriptions Program Evaluation Questionnaires Research Libraries At the request of the Pennsylvania State University Library, the Office of Management Studies surveyed Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members requesting information and documentation illustrating the organization, nature, and level of the library instruction function at their institutions. A review of the responses from 64 of the 94 ARL libraries surveyed reveals that 64% maintain a formalized and centralized administrative pattern for library instruction with the responsibility allocated to a specific person and/or a committee, and 36% have decentralized library instruction activities that are assumed by staff on a more ad hoc basis. One objective of the survey was to review the effects that administrative patterns have on library instruction programs. The centralized and formalized pattern of administration appeared to be the one preferred among those libraries providing library instruction activities in main, branch campus, and departmental libraries. Additionally, activity appeared to be greater and more diverse among libraries with formal and centralized library instruction programs. An analysis of the library instruction survey is followed by 17 representative documents from ARL libraries. They include nine program descriptions, five program evaluations, and examples of instructional materials from three institutions. (THC)
