contents Managerial and Technical Specialists. SPEC Kit 20. Academic Libraries Administrators Higher Education Library Personnel Library Surveys Library Technicians Occupational Information Personnel Directors Research Libraries Specialists This kit is compiled from documentation received as a result of a 1975 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) survey on the use of specialists in member libraries; updated materials gathered in 1978 are included. Survey data from 64 ARL members indicate wide utilization of various managerial and technical specialists. Of these, personnel librarians appear as the most frequent category among responding institutions (72%). Systems analysts and either budget officers, planning officers, or planning/budget officers are found in more than half the responding libraries. Computer programmers, audiovisual specialists, and staff development officers are reportedly employed less frequently in ARL libraries. In addition to positions mentioned in the survey, binding/restoration specialists, curators of special collections, library editor/publicists, building projects managers, affirmative action coordinators, and photographic services specialists are found in some of the responding libraries. Documentation and survey results indicate that in almost all cases, a master's degree and experience in a job-related field are required for specialist positions. The kit includes 2 documents on classifications/career paths, 5 documents on business/planning positions, 5 on personnel positions, 10 on systems, analyst, and programmer positions, 2 on information specialist/publicist positions, and 5 on book repair/special collections/photoduplication positions.
