contents Paraprofessionals. SPEC Kit 21. Academic Libraries Higher Education Library Administration Library Personnel Library Planning Library Research Occupational Information Paraprofessional Personnel Research Libraries In response to Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members' increased interest in the enhancement of manpower resources by greater utilization of paraprofessionals, ARL conducted a survey investigating various aspects of paraprofessional employment in the academic library. For the purposes of the survey, paraprofessional positions were defined as those requiring some level of higher education and/or experience, falling between the clerical and professional level. Survey results indicate that these positions are more frequently referred to as library assistants or library associates in academic libraries. Documentation indicates that libraries fill paraprofessional positions with personnel possessing a range of educational achievement, including college degrees, associate library degrees, and participation in library intern programs. Many position descriptions include requirements for clerical skills and in some instances, a degree of competency in such areas as foreign languages, art, and audiovisual production. Survey responses indicate a trend toward reclassification of these personnel to create either a new scheme offering opportunities for advancement, or by a refining of existing schemes. Originally prepared in 1975 and updated in 1978, the kit contains 10 documents: 4 classification scheme descriptions, 5 position descriptions, and 1 example of a staff orientation program. (THC)
