contents Planning for the Future of the Card Catalog. SPEC Kit 46. Academic Libraries Card Catalogs Higher Education Library Automation Library Catalogs Library Planning Library Services Library Technical Processes Online Systems Position Papers Research Libraries A 1978 information survey of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members indicated that at that time, only a few large libraries were planning to freeze their card catalogs and set up alternative catalog forms as a response to decisions made by the Library of Congress to freeze its card catalog, supply access to its collection through an automated system or computer-output-microfilm (COM), and adopt the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2). This collection of documents on planning for the future of the card catalog contains: (1) selected excerpts of "The Changing Character of the Catalog in America" by David C. Weber (reprinted from The Library Quarterly); (2) general planning documents from Princeton University, Cornell University, and University of California/Berkeley; (3) documents on technical planning/costs from University of California/Los Angeles, the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET), and Johns Hopkins University; (4) documents on reader/user services from University of California/Berkeley, University of Toronto, and the New York Public Library; and (5) documents on staff participation and education from University of Toronto, the New York Public Library, and Cornell University. A bibliography of journal articles and monographs on the current status and future of library catalogs, a sample program from an information series on COM catalogs from University of Toronto, and selected resources on closing the catalog prepared by Johns Hopkins University are provided.
