Academic Libraries Card Catalogs Higher Education Library Automation Library Catalogs Library Planning Library Services Library Technical Processes Online Systems Position Papers Research Libraries A 1978 information survey of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members indicated that at that time, only a few large libraries were planning to freeze their card catalogs and set up alternative catalog forms as a response to decisions made by the Library of Congress to freeze its card catalog, supply access to its collection through an automated system or computer-output-microfilm (COM), and adopt the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2). This collection of documents on planning for the future of the card catalog contains: (1) selected excerpts of "The Changing Character of the Catalog in America" by David C. Weber (reprinted from The Library Quarterly); (2) general planning documents from Princeton University, Cornell University, and University of California/Berkeley; (3) documents on technical planning/costs from University of California/Los Angeles, the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET), and Johns Hopkins University; (4) documents on reader/user services from University of California/Berkeley, University of Toronto, and the New York Public Library; and (5) documents on staff participation and education from University of Toronto, the New York Public Library, and Cornell University. A bibliography of journal articles and monographs on the current status and future of library catalogs, a sample program from an information series on COM catalogs from University of Toronto, and selected resources on closing the catalog prepared by Johns Hopkins University are provided.
