  • Annual Reports. SPEC Kit 49. Academic Libraries Annual Reports Higher Education Library Administration Library Planning Library Role Research Libraries An examination of the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center's (SPEC) file of 72 annual reports from Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions found that administrators were using annual reports for several purposes: as communication links with library users, the university administration, and the general university community, and as tools for developing public support and influencing acceptance of library goals and programs. At the beginning of this kit, a concise summary covers purpose and formats of annual reports, content issues, and future trends and issues. The kit contains complete annual reports for the year 1976-1977 from University of North Carolina, Stanford University, Duke University, and University of Arizona. The collection also contains excerpts of annual reports grouped under the following headings: (1) emphasis on planning/goals (Wayne State, University of Western Ontario, Ohio State University, and University of Kentucky); (2) university/library relations and support (Texas A&M, University of Toronto, University of Rochester, University of British Columbia, and Indiana University); and (3) information on internal library issues subdivided into (a) staffing (University of Texas and Harvard University); (b) collections (University of Alberta, University of California/Berkeley, and Syracuse University); (c) technical services (Johns Hopkins University); and user services (Arizona State University).
