Academic Libraries Evaluation Criteria Evaluation Methods Higher Education Job Performance Library Personnel Library Standards Personnel Evaluation Research Libraries This Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) collection of library documents illustrates approaches to and techniques of performance appraisal used in Association of Research Libraries (ARL) libraries. Included are (1) performance appraisal forms, policies, and procedures from Stanford University, University Library Council, Louisiana State University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Iowa State University, and University of Chicago; (2) forms and instructions for the evaluation of supervisors from University of Texas, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Kentucky, and Washington University; (3) guides and forms used in training supervisors in performance appraisal methodology, from Yale University and the University of Connecticut; and (4) a proposed plan for a performance appraisal system from Michigan State University. The collection is introduced by a concise summary of the results of a 1979 telephone survey of selected ARL member libraries, including the orientation of new approaches to performance review toward contributions to organizational goals, opening the lines of communication between supervisors and employees, and staff development. A brief discussion of needs and trends is included. (THC)
