Academic Libraries Higher Education Library Materials Library Planning Position Papers Preservation Prevention Research Libraries In a March 1980 Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) survey on preservation activities in Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions, 40 libraries reported having conducted a formal preservation study or needs assessment, 28 had adopted planning or policy documents, and 58 reported operating an active preservation program with an average of three staff members assigned full or part-time to preservation/conservation functions. Another 19 members intended to implement such a program within 5 years. This kit on planning for preservation of library materials contains 17 documents: (1) initial planning reports and recommendations from University of Notre Dame, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Kansas, Arizona State University, Duke University, University of Utah, and Western Council of State Libraries; (2) program and policy statements from University of Connecticut, Boston University, Brown University, Stanford University, and Southern Illinois University; and (3) historical perspectives from the National Library of Canada, the Library of Congress, Yale University Library, and Columbia University. The concise summary that introduces the collection briefly discusses current concerns and planning efforts, and tools and trends for the future. (THC)
