- Using Handicapped Workers as Career Role Models in the Career Development Process of Other Handicapped Persons. Final Report 1983-1984. Career Development Career Education Careers Directories Disabilities Employment Opportunities Material Development Postsecondary Education Resource Materials Role Models Videotape Recordings A project was designed to use employed persons who are handicapped as positive career role models for other handicapped persons and to record the processes and procedures of conducting this innovative program for replication by other educational institutions. A base list of over 200 employed handicapped persons was compiled following a Career Fair for the Physically Handicapped. Career role models were identified, videotapes were made of handicapped professionals at their places of business, and a book was published about these same persons. Other materials developed were posters, a comprehensive promotional brochure, and a "Directory of Workers with Disabilities." Recommendations emanating from project results were that educators, employers, parents, and interested others should be made aware of the availability of the newly developed resources; the resources should be used, their effectiveness evaluated, and educators and other appropriate helping professionals should attend an inservice training conference on using the materials; a lending library for handicapped career role model resources should be developed; and a manual describing implementation methods for existing resources should be produced. (Some project materials are appended.) (YLB)
