And Others Academic Libraries Higher Education Librarians Library Administration Library Personnel Library Planning Library Services Library Surveys Occupational Information Research Libraries A Fall 1981 Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) survey of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members found that of 80 respondents, 60 libraries reported 123 specialty positions involving a wide range of activities. The initial document in this kit on specialty positions in ARL libraries provides findings and statistics related to the 123 specialty positions reported in the survey. The kit comprises position descriptions in the following categories and institutions: (1) administrative and general management at Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2 positions), Temple University, and Smithsonian Institution (2 positions); (2) automation positions at Dartmouth College, University of Missouri-Columbia, Northwestern University, Pennsylvania State University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; (3) budgeting, fiscal, and business manager positions at Brigham Young University, University of California-Riverside, University of Hawaii, University of Houston, New York University, University of Rochester, and University of Western Ontario; (4) development positions at Case Western Reserve University and Emory University; (5) personnel officer positions at Brown University, University of Hawaii-Manoa, University of Houston, University of Notre Dame, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, Temple University, and University of Western Ontario; (6) planning and research positions at University of Colorado, Colorado State University, and University of Western Ontario; (7) systems analysis positions at Brigham Young University, University of California-San Diego, Duke University, New York University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, York University, and National Library of Canada (3 positions); and (8) other positions including special activities librarian at the Smithsonian Institute, specialist classification at New York Public Library, editorial officer at Harvard University, and head of the Wilson Recordings Collection at University of British Columbia. The kit also includes selected tables which include salary statistics for functional specialists in 1982. The concise summary that introduces the kit discusses factors contributing to libraries' needs for specialists, the role of specialists, and managing the specialist. (THC)
