  • A Study of Information Seeking Behavior of Ph.D. Students in Selected Disciplines. Final Report. Farid, Mona And Others Academic Libraries Behavior Patterns Doctoral Programs Foreign Students Graduate Students Higher Education Information Seeking Information Utilization Library Materials Library Services Tables (Data) Use Studies This research project investigated the information seeking behavior of Syracuse University doctoral students in six disciplines--economics, English, geology, history, philosophy, and physics. Questionnaires distributed to 112 students elicited data from 69 respondents (61.6%) on their educational environment, search strategies, selection of information channels, and demographic information. Special attention is given to the students' use of the tools and services offered by Syracuse University Libraries. Differences in information patterns among students in the six disciplines and between international and U.S. students are described, and suggestions concerning methods of library instruction are given. Several relationships were tested by statistical methods, with emphasis on those related to the students' search strategies and the material they rely on for their study or their previous knowledge of the literature. Suggestions for future research directions in this area, a 17-item bibliography, numerous tables, and a copy of the survey instrument are included. (Author/THC)
