In exploring future directions for automated information services, the committee members researched and wrote papers on the following topics: (1) the user; (2) information; (3) access to information, including means and technology; (4) the role of libraries and librarians in the future; (5) macro and micro organizational considerations for libraries in the future; and (6) fiscal considerations. These papers are appended. The body of the report consists of a series of recommendations that rest on the concept of utilizing technology to enhance levels of service. The overall aim is to have the funds and trained library personnel available to provide both traditional materials and on-line informational access for users at no charge. (THC) |
