- Centering on Global Education (Israel). Kronowitz, Ellen Curriculum Development Discovery Learning Educational Objectives Elementary Education Global Approach Interdisciplinary Approach Learning Activities Learning Centers (Classroom) Social Studies Student Projects This unit uses a learning center approach to helping elementary students learn about Israel. Following a rationale for implementing an interdisciplinary approach to global education, the unit discusses methodology and management of the program, which consists of seven independent learning centers and one library research center through which children rotate. Teachers are also expected to present lessons on selected aspects of Israeli culture to structure the learning. After completing all activities students will be able to describe various aspects of modern Israeli culture, compare Israeli culture with their own, and compare and contrast Israeli children's values with their own. Skills emphasized include gathering, organizing, interpreting and analyzing data, using reference materials to test hypotheses, working cooperatively, and doing hands-on work such as cooking. Suggestions for activities to begin the program, such as a slide show of Jerusalem dolls, are given, as well as a detailed list of activities to include with the art, music and dance, math, language, games, cooking, and artifact centers. Ideas for an Israel festival and a student contract conclude the unit. (IS)
