  • Planning and Implementing a Parent Education Component in a University Based Preschool Program. MacWright, Alicia Cox Newsletters Parent Attitudes Parent Education Preschool Education Program Evaluation Program Implementation Questionnaires Reading Materials Resource Materials Seminars A parent education component was planned and implemented as part of a university-based preschool program in the Department of Psychology at Rutgers-The State University. Goals of the practicum were to survey parents to identify topics of interest to them; to develop a parent education program focused on topics identified by parents; to sensitize parents to the importance of their role in the development of their children; and to survey parents completing the program to ascertain the usefulness of the program to their family. Goals were realized through (1) seminars on discipline, self-esteem, the relationship of television to learning in young children, and parental contributions to children's cognitive development; (2) the addition of printed material concerning parenting and child development to a "parents' corner" in the center library; (3) monthly distribution of a parent newsletter; and (4) periodic distribution of handouts and reprints on related topics. It was concluded that objectives of the program were met. A bibliography included in the present report cites parent education and related materials. Appendices provide instruments used to survey parents and evaluate the program and a list of materials placed in the parents' corner. (RH)
