The design of the Guelph document system represents a deliberate departure from cataloging and classification theory and standards. The document code is a shelf location device and is structured only as is necessary to bring publications within government jurisdiction into appropriate relationships. Other codes were designed to provide quick sorting capabilities through a data processing system and in no way necessitate involvement in rules, regulations, or principles of cataloging. This report describes the initial investigation, and the development of a new method for organizing government publications made possible by new technology. The topic is covered in five parts: (1) a statement of the problem, and an identification of the traditional methods of arranging and processing government publications in libraries; (2) analysis of the design of the Guelph document system; (3) a description of the codes which are the basis of the system; (4) a discussion of the operating system as it has developed including changes, costs, equipment, user acceptance, and cooperative use; and (5) a manual of procedures for the system as used at Guelph. Related references and a bibliography conclude the report. (THC) |
