contents A Regional System for Maps. Report No. 4. Daehn, Ralph M. Academic Libraries Cataloging Classification Comparative Analysis Foreign Countries Higher Education Library Collections Library Cooperation Library Networks Library Research Maps Regional Programs Prepared at the request of the Advisory Systems Committee of the Ontario Universities' Library Cooperative System, this report presents the results of study of the feasibility of a bilingual regional system for maps, or alternatively, the possibility of adapting the Guelph system to CARTESS. The report is presented in three sections: (1) a description of CARTESS (a system which allows the production of printed indexes of cartographic documents grouped in alphabetical order by names of areas and subjects, by scale, and by date) and the Guelph system; (2) analysis of both systems with emphasis on the formats utilized in each, and a comparison of both formats to Canadian MARC and LC MARC (Maps); and (3) recommendations concerning the development of a regional system for maps. Recommendations include: one regional system should be created for Quebec map collections and another regional system for Ontario map collections; the regional system should include shared cataloging among participating libraries; a format should be developed for use by both regional systems; a classification for area and subject should be chosen and should appear for every record; and development stages should be handled by task forces, and include participants from both the Quebec and Ontario regional projects.
