Information Retrieval Information Storage Information Systems Libraries Library Catalogs Library Cooperation Library Technical Processes Online Searching Online Systems Position Papers Programing Languages Standards The Bibliographic Service Development Program of the Council on Library Resources convened a meeting of experts in March 1984 to consider the advisability of applying standards in the development and operation of online public access catalog systems in libraries. Following presentations from three invited participants, working groups were formed to discuss and formulate positions regarding issues selected from a list compiled as a result of a 1983 meeting of system designers. Following a summary and preface the document comprises seven sections: (1) Introduction and Background; (2) Synopsis of the Meeting (includes a summary of a presentation by Charles Hildreth); (3) "Command Languages and Codes" (Michael Monahan); (4) "Screen Displays for Public Online Systems" (Joseph R. Matthews); (5) Summary of Working Group Observations and Recommendations; (6) Summary of Meeting Observations and Recommendations; and (7) Concluding Remarks. Each of the four working groups discussed issues related to command languages and codes and to displays and messages, and reported their observations and recommendations. A meeting agenda, a list of participants, and discussion topics of the working groups are appended. (THC)
