Bishoff, Liz And Others Cable Television Community Information Services Computer Software Computers Costs Databases Information Needs Information Retrieval Library Services Microcomputers Online Systems Problems Public Libraries Systems Development The Public Access Library System (PALS), a two-way cable television system for the delivery of community information, was developed by the staff of the Pasadena Public Library working with a consultant under a 1-year Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) grant. The objectives of the project were to: (1) identify six potential databases that would meet the information needs of the local area residents; (2) outline the hardware requirements for such a system; (3) detail the software needs and develop an implementation program; (4) develop costs and identify potential funding sources; (5) investigate the possibility of a cooperative program with another area library; and (6) prepare a report of the project for publication. A comparison of the original proposal with project activities shows that all of these objectives have been successfully met. Project accomplishments include the design of an experimental format for several local information databases and the design of a communication and delivery method that will reach a broad sector of the community either directly, through home cable television or microcomputers, or indirectly, through the same media at such facilities as libraries, public recreation facilities, and schools. The implementation phase of the project is scheduled to begin in 1985. (BBM) |
