Academic Libraries Databases Higher Education Information Systems Library Automation Library Planning Library Research Library Statistics Library Surveys Library Technical Processes Matrices Online Searching Online Systems Research Libraries This publication reporting the responses of 92 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members to an automation inventory survey conducted in March 1985 was generated from a database developed by ARL to provide timely, comparable information about the extent and nature of automation within the ARL library community. Among operational systems, the five most-often-reported uses for automation are: database searching (92), cataloging/utility (89), administrative (85), interlibrary loan (87), and serials/union list (57). Of libraries planning to automate functions, the five most frequent responses are: online catalog (58), serials check-in/claim (43), reserve room (39), cataloging/local (30), and circulation (29). When libraries reported on modifying systems, they most often reported acquisitions (10), circulation (8), and cataloging/local (6). This document includes: an introduction and survey background information; an overview of findings; examples of information from searches of the database; descriptions of inventory data elements (including a data collection matrix); a brief report on expenditures; and a schedule of fees for automation inventory searches and this publication. Print-outs of the data for all functions by library complete the report. (THC)
