Two points are emphasized throughout the document: the use of sophisticated and expensive media is not crucial to the success of a library instruction program, and effective use of media in library instruction involves careful planning and preparation. Among the advantages identified in using media effectively are: the ability to reach a large audience; the extension of influence of quality instruction; the ability to overcome time and space limitations; and the ability to create special effects to enhance learning. Following a general discussion of the use and advantages of media, the paper discusses in turn each of 10 steps involved in the instructional development process: (1) needs assessment; (2) solution selection; (3) analysis of task and content; (4) development of instructional objectives; (5) selection and sequencing of instructional strategies; (6) selection of media; (7) development and location of necessary resources; (8) tryout and evaluation; (9) revision/recycle; and (10) social aspects.
