  • Organizing for Preservation in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 116. Godden, Irene P. Moon, Myra Jo Academic Libraries Higher Education Job Development Library Administration Library Planning Library Surveys Library Technical Processes Occupational Information Preservation Prevention Program Descriptions Program Development Research Libraries Recognizing recent efforts by members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in establishing departments or designating full-time staff for preservation efforts, the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) undertook a survey to identify ways research libraries are reorganizing for these new activities. Telephone interviews were conducted with 27 libraries identified as having a preservation department or planning one. This kit includes initial planning statements, rationales for program placement, organization charts, and job descriptions. Documents from the following universities are included: Brigham Young University; University of California at Berkeley; University of Chicago; Columbia University; University of Connecticut; Cornell University; University of Iowa; University of Michigan; Ohio State University; Stanford University; Southern Illinois University at Carbondale; University of Texas at Austin; Texas A&M University; University of Virginia; and Yale University. A short summary of the survey results which introduces the collection of documents covers patterns of organization, technical services, collection development, administrative services, and issues and trends. A list of libraries contacted concludes the report. (THC)
