contents Information Identification and Organization. Student Study Guide. Module III: Information Types and Sources. Bolvin, Boyd M. Dupras, Rheba Audiotape Recordings Distance Education Higher Education Information Sources Library Catalogs Library Education Library Materials Library Networks Reference Materials Reference Services Search Strategies Slides State Programs Union Catalogs This third module, in a three module program, begins with a discussion of basic reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, and periodical indexes. It then describes the uses of special Alaska resources such as Alaska Almanac, Alaska Blue Book, Milepost, Education Directory, AULS (Alaska Union List of Serials), and the ALN (Alaska Library Network) Catalog. Also included are the Fiction Catalog, High School Catalog, and other standard catalogs available in most libraries. Module III also examines useful search techniques and methods of analyzing reference questions to determine the type, category, or level of information needed. An example of a successful reference interview is presented on audiotape. Finally, this module discusses how to provide ready access to local, state, and national resources and the role that library systems and networks play in making more resources available to more people. Each unit has learning activities, self-tests, tests, and assignments. Answers to the self-tests are provided in the document. (THC)
