- Report of the Committee on Computer Applications in the Library. Carlson, David And Others Academic Libraries Cataloging Flow Charts Higher Education Library Automation Library Circulation Library Networks Library Technical Processes Needs Assessment Program Descriptions Research Libraries Serials Trend Analysis Union Catalogs At the University of Rhode Island, the goal of the Library is to meet the informational needs of a diverse clientele: students, both graduate and undergraduate; faculty; other university staff; and, as a land-grant institution serving the state of Rhode Island, the general public. This report results from 8 months of committee work that involved writing and reading drafts, reading departmental reports, conducting interviews, making presentations, and attending weekly meetings. The first three sections comprise the bulk of the report. Section One addresses issues related to the environment: technological, professional, and societal trends as well as descriptions of the state and local environment in which the library operates. An in-depth examination of the current uses of the computer in the library, Section Two reviews three areas: the use of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) for cataloging, CLSI (CL Systems Inc.) for circulation, and the use of the computer for production of the library's serials list. The third section is an assessment of the critical needs of the library, which examines four processes or activities: a patron's search for a book, a patron's search for a serial, library processing of a new book request, and library processing of a new serial request. Recommendations based in part on the analysis of these processes, are presented in Section Four. The final section is an appendix including a bibliography and a glossary. (THC)
