  • Books That Made the Difference: What People Told Us. Sabine, Gordon Sabine, Patricia Adoption (Ideas) Attitude Change Authors Behavior Change Books Change Agents Change Strategies Incentives Influences Libraries Motivation Techniques National Surveys Needs Reading Interests Recreational Reading Social Influences Initiated by the Center for the Book, the Library of Congress program that promotes books and reading, this text contains the results of interviews of 1,382 Americans who were asked, "What book made the greatest difference in your life?" and "What was that difference?" The introduction contains the titles and authors of the books named by interviewees, as well as information about these respondents (where they live and work as well as their occupations and names). The first section of the book contains interviews from the National Books That Made the Difference Project, in which people discussed the impact that books had made on them, including the comfort in discovering that they were not unique in their feelings and experiences. Books served as inspiration for overcoming handicaps, trying new careers, "getting away from it all," changing ways of thinking, reinforcing their thinking, making money, starting new organizations, and making them feel better. The second part discusses some special insights about libraries and reading, including why some people who can read, don't; the ways in which libraries encourage people to read; and the influences gained from other printed material. The second part shows how to apply the techniques used in this project to create a successful local or state program to produce more support for the local library or library system. An appendix contains press releases and other publicity materials. (EL)
