There are two alternatives for this paper which is required of all 12th graders: The Future, a library based research experience, or The Hoffman Paper, a local history research paper prepared from local historical documents and other sources. This project focuses on the use of primary source documents as well as secondary sources in the preparation of a researched report. The document includes statements of objectives and "en route objectives"; a timeline of the research stages and feelings students are likely to experience at each stage; objectives for lessons on such topics as primary and secondary sources and plagiarism; descriptions of both the Future and Hoffman papers; and instructions and evaluation guidelines for the Hoffman Foundation's Original Historical Research Essay Contest.
