The descriptions are arranged alphabetically by title. In addition, the catalog contains an introductory essay that examines historical trends in spelling instruction in the United states, including: (1) the role of British spellers during the Colonial period; (2) the contributions of Noah Webster in the development of textbooks and spellers; (3) the growth in popularity of American spellers in the nineteenth century; (4) the influence of educational methods on spellers; and (5) the declining role of spelling in the expanding curriculum of the late nineteenth century.
