The guidelines indicate the essential features of services to disabled people and suggest alternative ways of setting up services according to local conditions. Topics covered include: the organization of library services for disabled people (needs and objectives, materials and equipment); non-medical hospital libraries including service in long-stay and specialist hospitals and institutions; services to housebound people (assessment of need, selection of material, publicity); education and training (general requirements, specific education and training, management, book and audiovisual material promotion); and representation within national library associations. Definitions of the terms used in the text and a list of standards and guidelines published by countries represented within the Section of Library Services to Hospital Patients and Handicapped Readers are also included.
