  • Electronic Text: An Amalgam of Capabilities for Creating, Informing, and Instructing. Monograph Number Two of the Electronic Text Monograph Series. Allen, Brockenbrough S. And Others Authoring Aids (Programing) Computer Assisted Instruction Computer Simulation Computer Software Delivery Systems Electronic Equipment Higher Education Information Systems Instructional Development Models Online Systems Programing Languages Skill Development Telecommunications Videotex This paper argues that electronic text applications in higher education can be conceptualized in terms of three communicational intentions of computer-based systems: informational, instructional, and instrumental (tool-oriented). Product-oriented and service-oriented applications of electronic text are contrasted, and instructional applications are explored through case histories of mature computer-based instructional systems, including TICCIT and PLATO. A discussion of the potential of authoring systems as tools for generating electronic text-based instruction is followed by an outline of perspectives for a systematic/scientific approach to instructional product development. It is suggested that if electronic text systems are to become truly useful resources, the problem of how to integrate the delivery of instructional products with other educational activities that are based on electronic text, must be addressed; such activities would include library data bases, electronic mail, and computer conferencing.
