contents The Preservation and Restoration of Paper Records and Books: A RAMP Study with Guidelines. Crespo, Carmen Vinas, Vicente Archives Books Cleaning Developing Nations Environmental Influences Guidelines Library Planning Paper (Material) Preservation Prevention Program Design Program Implementation Repair Intended for archivists and librarians, especially in developing countries, this study details the systems and principles important in planning and implementing a program for the preservation and restoration of paper documents and books. The importance of environmental (external) causes and effects of paper deterioration are discussed as well as the characteristics of the supporting and the sustained media (paper and ink) and the inherent (internal) causes of their deterioration. Preventive methods of conservation and conservation controls are also discussed, including factors relating to building design, document storage, bindings, lighting, and humidity/temperature. The larger part of this publication focuses on restoration, and discusses criteria for restoration and the processes involved, with guidelines for their use. These include photography, cleaning, deacidification, repair of cuts and tears, drying and pressing, lamination, and assembly and encapsulation. A 48-item bibliography is provided. (THC)
