The technical writing course is required of all engineering students, and its major focus is on writing a term paper containing a bibliography produced through library research. The workbook introduces students to basic library resources and services, emphasizing items most useful to engineering students. The workbook contains 21 chapters: each includes a discussion of the material covered, and a set of questions unique to that particular subject. Following an introduction, subjects covered by the workbook include: (1) a library tour; (2) author and title approaches to the card catalog; (3) subject approach to the card catalog; (4) Library of Congress Classification; (5) locating and checking out books; (6) periodical indexes and abstracts; (7) periodicals; (8) chemistry library; (9) physics library; (10) book review indexes; (11) newspapers and newspaper indexes; (12) audiovisual materials; (13) handbooks; (14) biographical information sources; (15) encyclopedias; (16) dictionaries; (17) almanacs and statistical sources; (18) maps, atlases, and gazetteers; (19) special collections; (20) government documents; and (21) the reserve reading room.
