The exercises are divided into five categories: (1) library skills, including reference book know how, and using the parts of books; (2) critical reading skills, including distinguishing between fact and opinion, analyzing the short story, identifying cause and effect, identifying author's point of view, detecting bias, evaluating persuasive communications, understanding the main idea and making inferences, and assessing freedom of the press; (3) research skills, including identifying a research topic, preparing a working bibliography, formulating a thesis, preparing a preliminary outline, reading and taking notes, writing footnotes, and writing the informal research paper; (4) composition skills, including fundamentals of grammar, writing topical sentences, writing concise sentences and well organized paragraphs, developing comprehensive essays, and developing creative writing; and (5) practical writing skills, including business and personal correspondence, and job resumes.
