It is designed to provide that familiarity with the university library environment and resources, skills in the use of computer generated indexes and abstracts, understanding of the Library of Congress organization of materials and availability of reference materials, and experience with varied forms of information and their specific retrieval (from ERIC microfiche to government documents), that will make for a much smoother transition from the 30,000 volume secondary school library to the multi-million volume university collection. This unit is designed to instruct students in the skills needed to successfully use the resources of a university library. The workbook includes exercises in the following areas: general reference materials; information retrieval vocabulary; search strategy; indexes and abstracts; Library of Congress catalogs; government documents; and information on a field trip to the SUNY/Albany Library with an assignment to complete. A questionnaire was mailed to students who completed the research unit to obtain feedback on students' success in adjusting to their respective college libraries. Results of that study and a copy of the evaluation survey are included. (THC)
