contents Subject Index to Databases Available from Computer Search Service. Atkinson, Steven D., Comp. Knee, Michael, Comp. Academic Libraries Database Producers Databases Higher Education Indexes Library Services Online Systems Reference Materials Research Tools Subject Index Terms The University Libraries Computer Search Service (State University of New York at Albany, SUNYA) provides access to databases from many vendors including BRS, Dialog, Wilsonline, CA Search, and Westlaw. Members of the Computer Search Service, Collection Development, and Reference Service staffs select vendor services and new databases for their support of undergraduate, graduate, and research programs on the SUNYA campus. To facilitate the use of these vendor services and more than 250 databases, a customized subject index was prepared to aid in the selection of databases for retrospective searches, end user searches, and ready reference use of online databases. The database index, which alphabetically lists all databases currently available, was created by selecting keywords and subject headings from the following five sources: (1) the database documentation created by the database vendors; (2) the database thesaurus or database user manual created by the database producer; (3) BRS' database FILE headings from the subject paragraph; (4) the Knowledge Industry Publications' database KIPI subject headings on BRS; and (5) the compilers' personal knowledge of the content of the databases. The total number of headings assigned to each database ranges from 4 to 25, and the total number of headings for the more than 250 databases is approximately 2,500. The index is available at the reference desks and in the Computer Search Service offices of the University Libraries. (Author/THC)
