  • Book Reviews in the Core Journals of Library and Information Science: A Bibliometric Comparative Analysis. Stetson, Keith R. Bibliometrics Book Reviews Comparative Analysis Indexes Information Science Library Collections Library Material Selection Library Science Periodicals Position Papers The core journals of library and information science were identified by overlap of coverage in Library Literature and Information Science Abstracts. Those core journals which review English language monographs in the field and are published by U.S. trade or university presses were identified. Reviews for the 6-month period from July 1, 1984, to December 31, 1984, were examined. Relationships between reviews, publishers of books reviewed, and the review journals are described. Despite the number of reviews of current imprints in American Libraries and Library Journal, the highest yield journals, their percentage of the total reviews published in the core journals would not allow a selector to rely on them alone. Only 32.7% of all 1983 and 1984 titles reviewed were listed in Book Publishing Record. It is suggested that selectors use reviews, announcement services, and publishers' announcements to identify new materials. (Author)
