It is organized into exercises dealing with types of materials rather than by area of the library. Each exercise has an introductory section explaining the materials covered, followed by a set of questions to be answered individually by students. Specific areas covered include dictionaries, encyclopedias, Library of Congress subject headings, the online catalog LIAS (Library Information Access System), book review indexes, biographies, the Library of Congress classification system, periodical indexes, the periodical holdings list, newspaper indexes, almanacs and statistical sources, government documents, formats for citing materials in bibliographies, and a checklist for developing a search strategy. Floor plans, examples of catalog cards and other forms, and a list of objectives for each chapter are included. (THC)
