  • Today's Libraries. A Resource Guide for Teachers. Elementary Education Guidelines Instructional Materials Library Cooperation Library Instruction Library Materials Library Skills Public Libraries School Libraries This resource guide was developed to provide teachers with ready-to-use activity sheets and suggested discussion topics to teach basic skills students need to use both school and public libraries effectively. Several assumptions were made in developing the guide: students can read at their grade level (although most materials are easily adapted); students know the parts of a book; all materials are housed in the library according to a logical system; and students understand an author's inverted name. Based on these assumptions, the guide includes a variety of teaching aides to help with instruction on how to use a card catalog, microfilm catalog, and computer online catalog. Students receive decoding tips for information found on various types of entries and gain a basic understanding of library terminology. The materials are classified by grade levels, 2-3, 4-6, 6-8, followed by two separate glossaries of vocabulary appropriate for the various levels. A list of suggested independent activities which can be adapted to any grade level is included. A bibliography of recommended supplementary sources concludes the document. (THC)
