contents Censorship in Louisiana Public Libraries. Morse, Susan Mignon Censorship Freedom of Speech Intellectual Freedom Library Research Library Statistics Library Surveys Moral Issues Public Libraries Questionnaires A survey was conducted to determine the level of censorship in Louisiana public libraries. A questionnaire based on a previous survey done by Show Me Libraries in 1982 was sent to 30 public libraries chosen from the northern and southern sections of the state on the basis of population parameters. Surveys were returned from 27 public libraries. Statistics for the responses are discussed and presented in graph form. Sixteen of the 27 surveys returned reported there were censorship problems in their libraries; 11 stated there were no problems. Findings indicated that, while there have been a number of censorship attempts within Louisiana in the last three years, most of the censorship has taken place in the northern portion of the state; methods for dealing with censorship vary greatly; individuals complained and attempted to exercise censorship more than groups such as political, civic, and religious organizations; and books on the subject of sex were the most highly censored. Suggestions for future research conclude the report. A historical background of censorship introduces the survey report, and the censorship survey instrument and cover letter and the American Library Association's "Library Bill of Rights" are appended.
