The guide consists of three major parts. Part 1 addresses the novice with an examination of the basic steps of research. Special attention is given to the card catalog. This part also gives examples of subject headings and explains how to find them in the subject catalog. Twelve topics about Chautauqua County and its people are presented in part 2: general history; archaeology; town, village, and city histories; agriculture; culture; architecture; education; ethnic groups; geography; industry; local government, state, and municipal laws; natural resources; reform movements; and religion. The suggested titles are from the Western New York Collection in Reed Library. Part 3 provides supplementary reference sources that can be used independently or in conjunction with a research paper. Resource materials which include lists of bibliographies, biographies, census records, directories, maps, and newspapers conclude the document. (RSL)
