- History of Reading: Status and Sources of a Growing Field. Cranney, A. Garr Miller, Janet Annotated Bibliographies Educational History Educational Improvement Educational Trends Graduate Study Higher Education Information Sources Reading Instruction Reading Research Recent developments in the field of reading indicate that a number of reading educators recognize the importance of studying the history of reading as a part of the knowledge base of reading education. A questionnaire was mailed to all coordinators of United States and Canadian programs listed in the International Reading Association's "Graduate Programs and Faculty in Reading." Results of response analysis suggest that graduate students are being taught some history of reading, usually as part of other courses. Therefore, a need exists for information about resources in the history of reading and how they can be found. Among possible sources for such information are the International Reading Association, the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas, and the Center for the Book in the U.S. Library of Congress. (A selected annotated bibliography of titles and topics in the history of reading is included.) (DF)
