Wheeler, Helen Rippier Bibliographies Course Descriptions Higher Education Mass Media Online Searching Postsecondary Education Womens Education Womens Studies Winning the 1985 "Media and Women" Course Outline Contest awarded by the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press, this course syllabus covers a semester-long interdisciplinary course on Japanese women and feminism as they are portrayed in the media and through the study of bibliographic references relevant to the topic. Objectives listed by the author include recognizing and documenting the universality of sexism, learning concepts and practicing skills associated with evaluation, use of research tools, and viewing-listening of all forms of media. Types of media listed include commercial and independent, print and non-print, traditional and feminist. While the syllabus includes researching and using standard library tools, the course also introduces the student to feminist bibliographic resources, and includes an introduction to on-line searching and data bases. Also included are lectures on Japanese history and women, discussions and readings on the similarities and differences between Japanese and American women, the development of media portfolios on course-related topics, and book reviews of feminist books. An appendix includes an extensive bibliography, a filmography, and seven pages of bibliographic exercises related to course subject matter. (CBC)
