- Research Instruction in Connecticut's Academic Libraries. Natale, Barbara Academic Libraries College Credits College Faculty Higher Education Library Instruction Library Surveys Questionnaires State Surveys Teaching Methods A survey on bibliographic instruction was sent to all 63 academic libraries in Connecticut in the winter of 1985-86. Librarians were asked if they offered library research as a separate course, a required unit in a broader course, or integrated with instruction at the invitation of the professor. Questions were included on faculty workshops, student tours, numbers of students and subject areas involved, audiovisuals, and problems or factors in successful programs. Of the 46 libraries which responded (73%), 2 offer undergraduate courses for credit, 2 offer graduate courses for credit, 8 include a required library unit in a broader course, and 33 integrate instruction with classroom teaching. Where bibliographic instruction has been successful as a course, it is either required or individualized. When offered as a required unit in a broader course, it provides systematic, motivated learning, but sometimes presents staffing problems; when successfully integrated with the curriculum, it demands a constant and creative outreach program. This report includes a list of institutions surveyed according to type of research instruction provided, a chart summarizing the findings, the survey instrument, contact persons at each institution, and a list of subject areas most frequently covered by research instruction.
