  • University of Tennessee, Knoxville Library. Preservation Planning Program. Final Report. Bengtson, Betty And Others Books Facility Planning Financial Needs Grants Library Equipment Library Materials Library Planning Long Range Planning Personnel Needs Preservation Repair Training This report is the result of a year-long preservation planning study at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Library, during which four task forces investigated the physical condition of the collections, environmental conditions of the libraries, state of disaster preparedness, and organizational issues relating to preservation. Task force findings revealed that 15.5% of the book collection is in a deteriorated condition, that problems exist in the control of heat and humidity in the environment, that the library is poorly prepared to cope with a disaster, and that procedural and organizational changes are needed to deal adequately with preservation issues. The report details 75 recommendations to the director, the most significant of which is the appointment of a preservation officer. Other major recommendations concern environment, physical facilities and equipment; disaster preparedness and control; preservation decision-making and treatment; non-print materials, microforms and special collections; staff education and user awareness; organization; external relations; and grants.
