Palmer, Pamela Academic Libraries Development Educational Change Financial Support Higher Education History Academic libraries are particularly affected by current financial problems in U.S. higher education. Lack of funds to make transitions as rapidly as higher education has changed focus or added dimensions is a recurrent theme in academic library development. This article presents the major developments and critical points of U.S. higher education and academic libraries in a chronological chart. A brief introduction provides an overview of these developments, and the accompanying seven-page bibliography provides complete citations for items in the chart and text. Emphasis is placed on landmark ideas and events, their implementation, and the impact of funding on advancement in higher education and its subset, academic libraries. This paper is designed to provide academic administrators and faculty members with the greater understanding of their institutional libraries within the broader scope that they need in this time of financial limitations.
