| contents | Teachers, Information and School Libraries. Hall, Noelene Annotated Bibliographies Curriculum Guides Guidelines Information Needs Information Seeking Inservice Teacher Education Library Skills Preservice Teacher Education School Libraries Teacher Education Curriculum Teacher Educators Teacher Role These guidelines are designed to show how teachers in both initial and continuing education should be trained to be information conscious and to integrate the use of school libraries and information skills in the curriculum. Topics discussed include information handling, school libraries, and teachers; teachers and their contexts; teacher education and information skills; and school libraries and teacher education. Three areas under which activities within teacher education could be organized are identified: (1) information skills and teachers' professional development; (2) information skills and the school library; and (3) learning how to learn and the school library. The outline of a possible course syllabus for the instruction of teachers and prospective teachers in the educational and curricular use of school libraries is provided, the methodology/structure of the course is discussed, suggested implementation strategies are presented, and the role of teacher educators is considered. Three appendices include a select annotated bibliography that is coded to indicate the intended reading audience, extracts of documentation from two schools in the United Kingdom which illustrate the process used to develop policies for incorporating information skills across the curriculum, and four case studies which illustrate approaches being implemented within teacher education in Zimbabwe, England, the United States, and the South Pacific region. References are also provided. (KM) |
