And Others Activity Units Citizenship Education Community Concept Teaching Decision Making Early Childhood Education Economics Education Elementary Education Experiential Learning Learning Activities Local Government Taxes This issue begins with information on new economic education curriculum materials and includes a conceptual introduction to the relationship between local government and the economy. Following this, four instructional units are provided. The first unit, called "Communities Need Rules," is intended for preschool and kindergarten children. Students play the "rule game," listen to and discuss Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," investigate school rules on littering and running, observe an ant farm for signs of cooperative living, and build a "block town" which features government-furnished services such as a school, a fire station, and a library. In "Kids Who Pay Taxes," the unit for grades 1 and 2, students start their own mini-town where workers pay income taxes from wages earned. In order to build understanding about the benefits of government provided services, the students perform a fully-scripted classroom skit. Third and fourth grade children build "family government shields," investigate private versus public-supported occupations, play a taxation board game, and report on community social service agencies. The fifth and sixth grade unit is about marginal decision-making and cost-benefit analysis and also looks at analyzing the trade-offs incurred by decisions to raise taxes. (JDH) |
