  • Evaluation and Dissemination of Educational Materials of Relevance in a Multicultural Society. Klein, Gillian Cultural Pluralism Educational Research Ethnic Groups Foreign Countries Information Services Inservice Teacher Education Instructional Materials Library Material Selection Multicultural Education Multicultural Textbooks Racial Bias Relevance (Education) Resource Centers Resource Materials Textbook Selection This paper discusses the evaluation and dissemination of educational materials of relevance in a multicultural society in the context of cultural diversity in Great Britain, and of information service provision in education. The background of multicultural education in the United Kingdom (UK) is discussed in terms of both societal and educational factors, including linguistic problems and lack of staff trained to meet the needs of multicultural students. Arguing that many books and materials currently in schools manifest racist bias, the paper suggests that the first step in dealing with this issue is to raise the awareness of teachers and librarians by increasing their understanding of how to evaluate and select materials for use in schools. The main facilities for informing educational practitioners of current resources of relevance to multicultural society are briefly described, including: bibliographies and lists; multicultural and race relations literature; specialist and general educational literature; periodicals; multicultural education resource centers; library services; and academic research and inservice training. References are provided. (Author/DJR)
