contents An Examination of End-User Search Services in Academic Libraries. Rockman, Ilene F. Academic Libraries Evaluation Methods Fees Financial Support Higher Education Individual Instruction Instructional Materials Library Services Library Surveys Online Searching Online Systems Online Vendors Problems Users (Information) A national survey of 70 academic libraries was conducted in Fall 1985 to gain a greater understanding of how end-user search services are used, and to assist in their design and implementation. A 69% response rate was achieved. The objectives of the investigation were to gather information on the following factors: (1) types and formats of end-user systems currently operational among the academic libraries surveyed; (2) modes of instruction and types of instructional materials employed; (3) clientele served; (4) evaluation methods and techniques; (5) funding sources; (6) perceived advantages of offering the services; (7) problems and obstacles to overcome; and (8) important variables to consider before offering a service. Study results indicate that libraries provide access to a wide range of users, a variety of systems, and a varied pattern of instructional materials, and that, as new systems emerge, libraries are substituting one system for another, rather than abandoning the practice of offering end-user searching to their patrons. Statistical results are presented in 10 tables, and notes and a listing of libraries surveyed are provided. (KM)
