This supplemental guide was developed for those teachers involved with science fairs as well as others who work with students in developing a project. Several reasons for holding a science fair are listed, along with some considerations on when to hold a science fair. The advantages and disadvantages of voluntary fairs versus mandatory fairs (where all students must participate) are discussed. The types of projects are categorized as either experimental or demonstration, and the pros and cons of each are listed. Other sections of the booklet deal with: (1) how to introduce the science fair project to the student; (2) organization of the science fair project (including a student flow chart); (3) basic information about projects utilizing an experimental design; (4) suggestions for using library resources to develop the written portion of the project; (5) tips on effective oral and visual presentations; and (6) guidelines for judging science fairs. The appendix contains sample materials from several fairs including letters to parents, judge's packets, and an extensive listing of ideas for projects. (TW)
