- Organization Charts. SPEC Kit 129. Hoadley, Irene B. Academic Libraries Administrative Organization Charts Higher Education Librarians Library Personnel Library Research Organizational Change Research Libraries Trend Analysis This kit is based on a review of the organization charts of 86 member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) gathered in spring 1986, compared with two earlier sets of charts published in 1973 and 1977, and contains charts of 61 of the libraries. Nearly one-fourth of the charts studied are under revision, indicating that changes are occurring in organizational structures within research libraries. While many of the charts continue to indicate a basically hierarchical structure, most include more functions than those submitted 13 years ago, and many show units that have been moved or renamed to reflect changes in workflow or institutional emphasis. Examples of particularly important functions include: development/fund-raising, preservation, collection development/management, planning, and automation. Other current trends reflected in the charts include (1) increased use of committees as a formal part of the organizational structure, in particular external advisory committees and internal committees composed of department heads, and (2) multiple reporting lines, especially in the area of collection development. There are also indications that a number of libraries are moving toward rearranging reporting and working relationships to conform more closely with workflow. (KM)
